Casa del Popolo (“The House of the People”) was established in 2000 and remains a family-run café/music venue/resto-bar/art gallery, and guests can even stay in one of the rooms of the Pensione Popolo upstairs.
It’s got a small concert venue in the back, along with a beautiful tree-filled back patio that you must walk through the bar/café to reach. This iconic Montreal venue has not only spawned its own festival, Suoni per il Popolo, but the venue's owners Kiva Stimac and Godspeed You! Black Emperor founding member Mauro Pezzente have opened three associated venues: La Sala Rossa, La Vitrola and, most recently, La Sotterenea.
Artists that have performed at Casa include Helena Deland, Cindy Lee, the Past, New Fries, Ought’s Tim Darcy, Tamara Sandor, She-Devils, Tess Roby, Noni Wo and Braids. The concert space at Casa is very intimate, only holding up to 55 people.
Monthly events at Casa include a spoken word night on the third Sunday of every month, as well as Monday DJ nights and Tuesday R’N’R DJ nights (both free). The entire venue is located on ground level, with ramps on both the venue and bar-front entrances for accessibility. Washrooms are gender neutral, and one is wheelchair accessible.
