Published Jan 14, 2021Following the arrival of "WORKING" last August, Cartel Madras have rolled out their first single of 2021. The Dom Dias-produced "DRIFT" arrives today alongside a video you can take in below.
Arriving today through Royal Mountain Records/Sub Pop, "DRIFT" is described by Contra and Eboshi Ramesh as "a sequel of sorts to 'Goonda Gold' — something that sounds hype, fun and sets the tone for the new year and our upcoming new project."
The accompanying self-directed video opens with the duo throwing open the plastic curtain to a well-stocked grow-op, and soon finds them and their crew loading up the van for delivery. Keep your eyes peeled for cameos from Witch Prophet, filmmaker Cricket, Toronto selector Jayemkayem, producer Dias and more.
"'DRIFT' is about BIPOC women enjoying themselves and the fruits of their labor," Cartel Madras continue. "In our music video we wanted to show a beautiful group of creatives and artists from various backgrounds dabbling in marijuana. We also wanted to show a group of women owning the means of production. Lyrically, this song exists in the Cartel Madras Universe and follows us doing what we do best; self-referentially discussing high powered, risky, good times."
Both "DRIFT" and "WORKING" will appear on Cartel Madras' forthcoming project The Serpent and The Tiger, expected to arrive this year. The release will mark the third instalment of the duo's Project Goonda trilogy, which includes 2018's Trapistan and 2019's Age of the Goonda.
